The Lighthouse Project

At The Bridge we look at offering support to people experiencing homelessness in a number of ways. We have our kitchen that offers breakfast and a hot lunch, our shower and washing machine facilities, and computers with access to free Wi-Fi. But another way we work to support people is through The Lighthouse Project.

The Lighthouse Project is here to help people who are at risk of becoming homeless, or have experienced homelessness in the past.

Through mentoring one-to-one support is provided, either face to face, over the phone, or through a video call. Mentoring lasts for at least six months, and during that time we help to build the self-esteem and confidence of our guests, reduce isolation, and create meaningful, lasting change. Through our weekly meetings additional support is provided, as well as the chance to make friends. These meetings are available to anyone who has ever received support from The Lighthouse Project, for as long as they need.

“I am able to look after myself more, my health has improved. It was something that I could do every week, that got me out of bed. I was able to start thinking about what I want.”  - A mentee.

Our aim is to reduce social isolation, improve mental and physical well being, and provide access to practical help, all while building a non-judgmental, professional relationship between mentors and mentees. Since 2018 The Lighthouse Project has delivered over 1000 hours of mentoring. All mentees have reported either an improvement in their health and well being, or an increase in their self-esteem. In 2021, 100% of mentees said they felt less lonely as a result of mentoring.

Our mentors are all volunteers from different backgrounds, with different skills and experiences. If you are considering volunteering don’t worry about barriers, as we work on a case by case basis during the recruitment process.

But why should you volunteer with The Lighthouse Project?

By volunteering with us you would be helping to give back to the community, offering meaningful help, and creating a more caring society. You would have access to professional support from the mentoring team, who are available to contact for guidance. Full training would be given before being matched with a mentee, and every month there are workshops that cover topics you are likely to experience.

“I enjoyed the whole experience. It felt nice to be able to play a part in someone’s life and be a part of someone’s journey.”  - A mentor.

The Lighthouse Project offers access to an online library of resources, including information, worksheets, theories, and practical guidance. There will also be a monthly reflective space held, giving mentors the opportunity to speak with each other, share difficulties, perspectives, and thoughts about the workshops. While mentoring our volunteers will develop professional skills, including listening and communication skills, insight into people from different backgrounds and cultures, and working with the public. You’ll also learn about mental health, homelessness, and  supporting others; which are integral skills for anyone looking into building a career in counseling.

“I learnt new ways to build trust, and how to help manage someone's difficulty attending meetings. It allowed me to strengthen skills such as active listening and listening without judgment.”  - A mentor.
